Policies that are positive towards the foreign investor and membership of the EU have made purchasing off plan property in Greece easier than it has ever been before. That said, it is a relatively new process which has only been available to EU nationals since 1991, meaning it can have its pitfalls and can be plagued with bureaucracy, so the potential off plan investor should always be prepared. Local customs can also prove a hindrance, though these are usually coincidental as opposed to regular occurrences. EU nationals are allowed to purchase property most regions in Greece, though special permission must be obtained to purchase property or land in areas around the borders. Mortgages are available from a number of lenders and are in the process of falling in line with the methods of other EU countries. Certain uninhabited Greek islands can also be purchased, though only from specialised vendors and obviously for very high prices.
