Internal Travel in Greece

With just over 72,000 miles of roads – the vast majority of which are paved – Greece offers a pleasant drive wherever you happen to be. Public transport is well implemented with widespread bus services that are both reliable and cheap, as well as being offered for short journeys and long-haul drives. Taxi services are also widely available and come in again at reasonable prices – though expect fares to spike around two a.m. or on airport runs. The regular European car hire companies are also spread throughout Greece, and offer the same services that anyone would expect of them elsewhere.

Athens is home to both an underground Metro system and a tramline, which covers the city and part of the surrounding area – as with other areas of Greek public transport, these are well-maintained, efficient and cheap.

Rail travel is well worth taking advantage of in Greece, with regular services over and around the country offered at – again – very good rates. European rail passes such as Inter Rail Cards are valid on most journeys and can offer massive discounts on tickets, and there are numerous other options for passes available that offer a multitude of travel options at all classes.

Travelling by sea within the Greek isles is cheap, easy and necessary if anywhere off the mainland needs to be reached for an affordable price. Regular services operate from all ports, to major and minor destinations all around the islands, and tickets are easily obtained from company offices at the ports themselves. Ferries, yachts and hydrofoils are all options for transport, and internal travel by sea is very popular in the summer.

Internal flights are available from Olympic Airlines, the national airline, and travel to dozens of international and domestic airports throughout the islands, though obviously it is not the cheapest of options, especially when compared to ocean travel.

There are some islands that don’t allow any kinds of motorised transport – so be ready to travel via rowing boat or donkey and cart if needs be!
