There are a few land borders that can be crossed by vehicle into Greece, from either Macedonia, Bulgaria or Serbia and Montenegro. Ferry services also operate from Turkey, Russia, Cyprus, Italy and Croatia and dock at major ports in and around the Greek islands. A coach service is also available both from and to Paris, Istanbul, Sofia and Dortmund – though it should be noted, the journey from Paris is around 2,000 miles. A standard national driving licence is all that is necessary for EU nationals, though it is advisable for drivers to obtain Green Card insurance for the duration of the visit, as without it the insurance cover offered will only be of the most basic level. Foreign registered cars, caravans, motorcycles, boats and trailers can be imported to Greece by EU nationals for a maximum of six months, though with additional paperwork and fees the stay can be extended to 15 months.
