Greece is a popular tourist resort and has been for a number of years, with established regions and islands for party-goers coupled with ancient sites for those seeking a more laid back and considered visit. With the EU being the focal point of much of the nation’s foreign policy, Greece has an open and welcoming attitude to foreign visitors – there are even tourist police patrolling the streets of the tourist hotspots, with these multilingual officers available to help any lost traveller or provide information when it is required of them. The spectacular history of the country includes legacies left by the Romans, Arabs, Turks and any number of other cultures, meaning no two ancient sites are likely to be the same. From the fortifications of the Venetians, the castles of numerous crusaders and the churches and monasteries of the Byzantines, spoilt for choice is the expression most befitting of any tourists in Greece. Starting in the capital Athens, a stop for any and every visitor should be made at the Acropolis to see the 2,400 year old Parthenon, one of the most famous ancient locations in existence. From here a visitor could make their way to the old quarter of the town – Plaka – and see numerous flea markets and shops. Most of which are renowned for their competence at selling all manner of junk to all manner of people. When the day is coming to a close, the night is still young in Athens – a bustling and vibrant nightlife is what awaits any and all, with bars and clubs staying open until at least three a.m. Just remember about the ‘qualities’ of Ouzo – it isn’t called Ouzo Destructo for nothing! When the morning comes and the hangover has cleared there is still a whole load more of Athens to be explored, with the restored open air theatre the Odeon of Herodes Atticus putting on shows from June to September, the excavations at the Library of Hadrian or simply a restaurant to sample some simple Greek cuisine, tourists really are spoilt for choice in the capital city. Move away from Athens and there is still a massive amount to be explored and experienced: Olympia, the location of the first ever Olympic Games, home to the Olympic Flame and the Temple of Zeus; Mount Olympus – Zeus’ home, Greece’s largest mountain and a chance to see a Centaur… Maybe; churches such as Agia Sofia; thousands of islands such as Corfu, Crete and Lesbos; numerous festivals, such as the Epidaurus Festival – the list is just far too big, and Greece is a place that would need a long, long time to be fully appreciated by any visitor. http://www.greektourism.com/ http://www.gnto.gr/ http://www.greek-tourism.gr/
