Sitting in Southeast Europe and flanked by the Ionian, Aegean and Mediterranean Seas, with land borders to Turkey, Bulgaria, Albania and Macedonia, mainland Greece and its archipelago of around 2,000 islands dominate the Aegean region. The clusters of islands make up one fifth of Greece’s entire landmass and provide more examples of the massive diversity in and around the nation – some islands would rival the most cosmopolitan of Mediterranean holiday resorts, with non-stop partying and an attitude of pure hedonism, whereas other islands may offer quaint little villages that only have one boat to the mainland per week – both geographically and culturally, Greece is a land of contrast.
